Notices go out automatically each morning, about three weeks before a renewal. You only ever need to act on Needs attention. The full procedure is in Renewal notices — the written procedure.

What this does, exactly. Creates a full membership with twelve deliveries scheduled the same way a paid one is, so it appears on posting day like anyone else. It is recorded as a gift, which means it can never renew and never charge them — there is no card, and no renewal notice will ever be sent. The first delivery is flagged for wrapping.
A year on, they’ll be offered the chance to continue at their own expense. They’re free to ignore it.
